Akash had started his morning quite successfully, as he was finally able to get some time to work on things that needed to be addressed with AG. He got an email from Charlotte at JFL confirming the date of the JFL retreat. It was the same weekend as the Shah wedding in November, but they could handle two events.

A text came through from James, just as he added it to Lulu’s calendar. Leak in ballroom.

Akash hopped up and met Reena and his sister downstairs. He heard Reena assure Mr. Cole that they could in fact pay their bills.

Now.

He could only imagine her level of embarrassment to learn that Lulu’s was known for being unable to pay their operating costs.

“I know a guy.” Akash called out from the doorway. He tapped his phone and put it to his ear.

Reena turned to the sound of his voice. Kirti stood beside her, taking in the room.

Akash spoke into his phone for a moment, before ending the call. His step sloshed a little when he walked in to stand beside her and looked around. “My guys will be here in a couple hours. In the meantime,” he looked at Jerry, “let’s get all the Shop-Vacs we can find.”

“Who is your guy?” asked Reena.

“Elijah Stevens. He has his own plumbing company. The company is new, but Elijah has been in the business a long time, and he does excellent work.”

“How do you know him?”

Akash evaded her eyes. “Through work.” He wasn’t ready to tell her or anyone what his real work was.

He felt Kirti’s eyes on him.

Mr. Cole’s team brought up a couple small Shop-Vacs. Akash took off his jacket and rolled up his shirt sleeves to help suck up the water.

“Ah. Mr. Gupta. That is not necessary. We can handle it,” Mr. Cole said.

“Just wanted to be useful.”

“Suit yourself.” The older man shrugged. “We could always use the help.”

Reena had on her I’m-pissed-but-I’m-hiding-it-behind-my-lipstick face. “I have meetings scheduled. You all good here?”

Akash looked at Mr. Cole and they both knew. Reena was going to see her mother. He nodded at her. “Do what you have to.” She marched out, a woman on a mission. Akash might have felt bad for her mother, except that he was team Reena in this situation.

Akash helped out with the Shop-Vacs, until Elijah arrived an hour later. Elijah Stevens was some years older than him, and a few inches taller, but not new to the business. He was as reliable as they came. Akash explained the situation to Elijah, and in no time, his team was working alongside Mr. Cole’s team to get to the source of the leak.

Elijah figured out the problem within the hour.

“I’ll go tell Reena,” Akash said. He texted her and found that she was still in the building. He went upstairs and knocked on her door. She was speed typing. “Hey. I thought you were going to your mom’s.”

She looked up from the laptop. “I never said that.”

“True, but you were so mad—”

“I wanted the whole story before I went over there.
